Last night, the Los Angeles Press Club made official what all of us that have worked on Longbeachize and the Long Beach Post. Brian Addison was awarded the Best Online Journalist in Southern California by the L.A. Press Club.
When Addison’s name was announced and his image appeared on the screen, “Table 6,” filled with his colleagues from Streetsblog and Santa Monica Next, erupted in applause. We didn’t even hear the congratulatory announcement that, “Strong writing results in interesting columns covering a number of topics of relevance to readers.”
Addison was the only journalist from Long Beach to be a finalist in any category outside of OC Weekly’s Charles Lam, who scored a single finalist nod. In addition, the category for “best online journalist’ was stacked with heavyweights, including Bill Boyarsky and Robert Scheer with Truthdig.
We’ll be celebrating Addison’s win at Hamburger Mary’s next week on July 8th. Learn more on Facebook. And let’s be blunt, award-winning journalism doesn’t come free or cheap. If you want to see more of Brian’s work, consider donating, advertising or otherwise sponsoringLongbeachize.

And let me throw in a personal pitch for Brian Addison. After Brian considered new endeavors earlier this year, news outlets from around the region rushed to recruit him — but the loyalty to his community made him stay in Long Beach. So instead of joining the staff of another publication, he accepted the challenge to exercise his skills and expand on his expertise with the Downtown Long Beach Associates and continued to work for his community. Brian is a Long Beach treasure, and we’re happy and honored to work with him and the DLBA to cover and promote some of the many wonderful attributes that make Long Beach great.
