In case you didn’t know, Long Beach made some waves this week in national news. One was thanks to yours truly while the other was, well, thanks to the Long Beach Public Library (LBPL). Or, as the Long Beach Post brilliantly said it best in their headline: “Long Beach Public Library Gets Dragged on Conservative Social Media.”
Since the LBPL hosted a drag queen to read to children to celebrate LGBQTQ history month, conservatives were not thrilled—particularly including Republican candidate for the 43rd Congressional District, Omar Navarro, who tweeted that “demonic teachings alive in Long Beach.”
It even prompted the satirical Church of Satan Twitter account to praise, “Hail Satan!” while noting that drag queens are educating younger generations about love and acceptance better than most.
Sadly, the outrage prompted the LBPL to remove the image of Xochi reading from both its own Instagram and the City’s Instagram.
But it has particularly brought out the rage of conspiracy theorist and Infowars blogger Alex Jones—if you’re interested in some of his most mind-boggling conspiracies, check out nonprofit MediaMatter’s list—who borders performance art by insinuating that the public reading was a genuinely sinister, demon-driven event—because said drag queen, Xochi Mochi, wore horn-like protrusions from his costume.
“Imagine if someone in a demon outfit showed up next to a baby giraffe and said, ‘Hi, I’m a demon. Be inclusive. Don’t be mean to me. Let me wear demon horns and come up and look like a complete alien from another planet,'” Jones said.
Oh, it gets better, as Jones insinuates that these Cher-loving “demons” are out to get our children.
“[Drag queens] dress up like space aliens all over the United States of America and all over the world in horrible, demon psychopath outfits that make Pennywise look beautiful,” Jones goes on. “And they show up and they have their way with children, in demon outfits. I mean, if you’ve got men that look like 400-pound goblin demons with your children, there’s nothing you won’t put up with.”
In other words, Long Beach drag queens, keep doing what you’re doing. Because you bring happiness, education, and demonic summonings to the world while putting Long Beach on the map in the best way possible.
