It looks like Long Beach
will be may be the first city in LA County to have a bike share program as the City let go of its former contract with the defunct Bike Nation, handing it over to German company Nextbike to Santa Monica-based CycleHop to provide the equipment. This follows the announcement earlier this year that the City would bid for a Downtown bike share program and follows the City’s failed contract with Nextbike.
According to the recommendation unanimously passed at this week’s City Council meeting,
Nextbike CycleHop will be responsible for providing the equipment for “a bike share program as soon as possible and will work with CycleHop to quickly install and deploy the 50 bike share stations and 500 bikes secured via the federal grant.” Nextbike CycleHop will now have to work with an operator that will be chosen “in the coming weeks” as “staff will work diligently to determine a bike share operator and operating model, to be deployed as soon as possible, and will work with CycleHop to install and deploy the bike share stations and bikes.”
So we hope. The bike share drama in Long Beach has been eyebrow-raising.
LA had to ditch Bike Nation after it was discovered that the bike share company did not know the advertising parameters set by the second-largest city in the U.S. This also follows their abrupt leave of their bike share program in Anaheim, where the City of Anaheim claimed Bike Nation “chose to walk out themselves.” This all precedes the cryptic photo of a skirt guard of one of the bikes for the long-anticipated bike share program promised to Long Beach and is a nice relic for the storyboard.
According to the recommendation, the latest casualty of the bike share drama, Nextbike “unfortunately [had] withdrawn their interest to operate the City’s bike share program.” Hopefully
Nextbike CycleHop doesn’t suffer the same.
