Now that the site is back up and running, we wanted to welcome all of our readers to 2015. I like to be as transparent as possible with our readers when there are changes to our organization so that all of you can judge where we’re coming from. So here’s four quick updates about Longbeachize for 2015:
1) The Hack – On Thursday, January 8, our website and a number of other WordPress websites were hacked. The result was that the website was down for five days as the tech people at Host Gator ran searches to make sure there was no malware or other nasty surprise hiding in files. We decided together to keep the site down until we were sure it was safe. Because donor information is stored off-site, anyone who has given part of their personal fortune to keep us safe has nothing to fear. When the site came back, we had to revert to standard WordPress for a short period of time because of a glitch between WordPress and our theme. Everything has been resolved. The site is both working fine and looking great. We’re sorry for any issues the site being down caused, but we thought it most important that we come back with everything working and the site 100% secure.
2) Board Changes – Longbeachize is part of the larger non-profit Southern California Streets Initiative (SCSI) that also publishes Streetsblog Los Angeles and Santa Monica Next. At our last Board Meeting, it was decided to formalize our local Boards of Advisors to help with the editorial direction, fundraising and event planning that supports our publications. 3) Brian’s New Job – If you read the Long Beach Post, or follow Longbeachize editor Brian Addison on social media, you know he’s changed jobs. He split ways with the Post in December and joined Downtown Long Beach as its communications director earlier this year. Brian will remain our editor and looks forward to continuing his journalism career with Longbeachize.
4) Our Fiscal Health – While we didn’t reach our pledge drive goal in November/December, we did quite a bit better than we did in our Spring pledge drive. With our advertising revenue, we have enough funds to continue publishing at our current rate for awhile, but to expand into a daily (or near-daily) news source, we’re going to need to find new sources of income to match what we have.
